Chapter Twenty-One

“Keep going,” John Wolverton decided. “These rigs can take a lot of heat.”

The front transport plunged into the boiling woods, flames rising a hundred feet into the sky where the tinder-dry woodland had succumbed to the fire. Eva's transport followed right on its tail. As they surged headlong into the furnace, Eva beheld rivers of flame pouring down between trees where ground level foliage had caught fire. Trunks smoldered, cracks in the black-charred bark revealing glowing wood underneath like a network of veins. Where there was no fire, the ground shined red.

“It could be worse,” said Matt Tanzer in an out-of-place upbeat voice.

“How could this be worse?” Luke challenged.

“Well, we don't have that chasing us! Look left.”

Above the burning skyline rose another of the Behemoths, all muscle and steel-tough hide, facing away from them as it smashed at the ground in the distance. The answer became clear as it raised one fist encased in ice, the wing of a passenger jet trapped within.

“More than one Hell seeks domination,” concluded Eva.

“Trust me,” added Madden. “You don't want one of those bad boys on your tail.”

Only a few days ago, the tsunami was still all too real for Eva. This was a rollercoaster ride without end.
